GST in Alberta: what Calgary businesses should know

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so most Calgary businesses charge 5% GST rather than HST. HST applies when you sell to customers in a participating (HST) province.

  • When you must register: once your taxable sales pass $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive calendar quarters (the small supplier limit). Taxi and rideshare drivers, including Uber drivers, must register from their first dollar of fares.
  • How often you file: the CRA assigns annual, quarterly or monthly filing based on your annual taxable sales (annual up to $1.5 million, quarterly up to $6 million, monthly above that). You can choose to file more often.
  • Quick Method: many small businesses with taxable sales of $400,000 or less can use the Quick Method, which can simplify filing and sometimes reduce the GST you remit.
  • Input tax credits: keep receipts that show the supplier’s GST number so you can claim back the GST you pay on business expenses.

We handle GST registration, returns, catch-up filing for missed periods, and CRA reviews for businesses across Calgary, Airdrie and Chestermere, often together with bookkeeping and payroll. See our tax deadlines and how our fees work.

GST/HST filing for Calgary businesses and self-employed people

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so most Calgary businesses charge only the 5% GST. Getting it right still matters: you must register once you pass the small-supplier threshold, file on time, and claim every input tax credit (ITC) you're entitled to. Garg Accounting handles GST for contractors, restaurants, trucking companies, rideshare drivers, online sellers and professional firms across Calgary.

When do you need a GST number?

  • When your taxable revenue goes over $30,000 in four consecutive calendar quarters, or in a single quarter.
  • Immediately if you provide taxi or rideshare services (Uber, Lyft), whatever your revenue.
  • Voluntarily, if you want to recover the GST you pay on business expenses.

How we help

  • GST registration and choosing the right filing frequency (monthly, quarterly or annual).
  • Choosing between the regular method and the Quick Method where it saves you money.
  • Reconciling sales and ITCs to your books before every return.
  • Filing missed or overdue GST returns and requesting penalty relief where possible.
  • Responding to CRA GST reviews and audits.

Frequently asked questions

Do I charge GST or HST in Calgary?

Sales in Alberta are generally subject to 5% GST only. If you sell to customers in HST provinces, the HST rate for that province may apply. We set up your invoicing correctly.

When is my GST return due?

Monthly and quarterly filers file one month after the period ends. Annual filers are generally due three months after year-end, but individuals with a December 31 year-end and business income file by June 15, with payment due April 30.

What is the Quick Method?

The Quick Method lets eligible small businesses calculate GST using a reduced rate on sales instead of tracking every input tax credit. It often reduces the GST owing for service businesses and drivers.

I haven't filed GST in years. Can you help?

Yes. We prepare and file your missed returns, calculate what's owing and, where it applies, request relief from penalties and interest.
