Oil and Gas Accounting for Calgary and Alberta

Alberta’s energy sector runs on small and mid-sized businesses: oilfield service companies, hot shot and hauling operators, welders, safety consultants, equipment rental firms and independent contractors working rotations across the province. Garg Accounting gives these businesses and workers practical, CPA-led accounting that fits how the industry actually works.

Why energy-sector clients choose us

Camp, rotational and site workers

Many oil and gas workers in Calgary fly in or drive out to camps and remote sites. Board and lodging, or an allowance for them, at a special work site can be tax-free when the conditions are met and your employer completes Form TD4. Travel to and from a remote site can also be tax-free in some cases. We check your T4 and pay statements so these benefits are treated correctly, and we report any side income from consulting or contracting.

Equipment and vehicles for oilfield contractors

Trucks, trailers and heavy equipment are usually your biggest costs. We track them in the right capital cost allowance classes, claim depreciation in the right year, and handle GST input tax credits on purchases and the tax on selling or trading in equipment.

Frequently asked questions

I'm an oilfield contractor. Should I incorporate?

It depends on your income and how you work. Incorporating can defer tax, but contractors who work like employees for a single client may be treated as a personal services business, which is taxed at a much higher rate. We review your contracts and numbers before you decide.

Can you handle payroll for field crews?

Yes. We run payroll with overtime, per diems and allowances, remit source deductions, issue T4s and ROEs, and prepare WCB Alberta reporting.

Can I claim my truck and tools?

Self-employed contractors and corporations can generally deduct the business portion of vehicle costs and depreciate tools and equipment. Employees can only claim specific expenses in limited cases. We’ll tell you what applies to you.

I work rotations and I'm rarely home. Can you still do my taxes?

Yes. You can upload documents from your phone, review your return by phone or video and sign electronically.

Are camp accommodation and meal allowances taxable?

Board and lodging at a special work site, or a reasonable allowance for them, can be tax-free when the conditions are met and your employer completes Form TD4. We review your situation and your T4 to confirm.

Can you handle equipment depreciation for an oilfield services company?

Yes. We record trucks, trailers and heavy equipment in the correct capital cost allowance classes, plan the timing of purchases and sales, and claim GST input tax credits.
