Every February and March, slips arrive from employers, banks and schools. Here is what the most common ones mean, so you know what to bring to your accountant.
Employment and benefits
- T4 – Statement of Remuneration Paid: employment income, plus CPP, EI and income tax deducted from your pay.
- T4A – Pension, Retirement, Annuity and Other Income: pension income, some scholarships, and fees paid to self-employed contractors.
- T4E – Employment Insurance benefits: EI benefits and any tax withheld.
- T4A(P) and T4A(OAS): Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security benefits.
- T5007: social assistance or workers’ compensation payments.
Investments
- T5 – Investment income: interest, dividends and some foreign income from banks and brokers.
- T3 – Trust income: income from mutual funds, ETFs and trusts. These often arrive late in March.
- T5008: proceeds from selling stocks, bonds or funds. You still need the original cost to work out the capital gain or loss.
Registered plans and education
- RRSP contribution receipts: for contributions made after the first 60 days of 2026 and up to March 1, 2027 (contributions from early 2026 may already have been used on your 2025 return).
- T4RSP and T4RIF: withdrawals from an RRSP or RRIF.
- T2202 – Tuition: eligible tuition from colleges and universities, usually downloaded from your student account.
When slips arrive
Most slips are due by the last day of February. For the 2026 tax year that is Monday, March 1, 2027. See all the dates in our Calgary tax deadlines guide.
Self-employed? You may not get a slip
Gig and contract income often has no slip. Keep your own records of income and expenses. See our guide for Uber and delivery drivers.
Frequently asked questions
When should I receive my tax slips?
Most slips, including T4, T4A and T5, must be issued by the last day of February. For the 2026 tax year that is March 1, 2027, because February 28 falls on a Sunday. T3 slips are usually issued by March 31.
What if I lost a slip?
Most slips are available in CRA My Account a few weeks after they are issued. You can also ask the employer or institution for a copy.
Do I have to report income if I didn’t get a slip?
Yes. You must report all income, including cash, tips and self-employment income, even if no slip was issued.
We prepare personal tax returns in Calgary and can download your slips from CRA with your authorization.
